Your mention of the arrogance thing brought a few thoughts to mind with me. I've found that God sends me little humourous reminders all the time, and if I listen to them, I save myself from the ass-falling-hard-on-the-ground reminders. One which keeps helping me happened a few years ago: I was thinking about a friend's situation, after she had asked me for some insight into problems she was struggling with, and I was feeling mighty proud of myself for being "someone" another person would reach out to. The next second, I looked down, and noticed I was pouring coffee grounds into my cereal bowl!!! THAT brought me back to earth pretty fast!:) There's been plenty of similar reminders ever since! Does God have a warped sense of humour or what???????:)
